DIY CAMERA TRIPOD STAND

Posted on Posted in CNC MACHINING

This is my tripod stand with the help of which I am able to record my project with low angle shots. There are bunch of tripod stand you can find online but rather than buying that I prefer to make my own. I am new to software so there might be some problem but rest drawing will be fine. After completing my build, I change little bit of my design so the final design has improvement than that which I made. If you face any problem than feel free to ask. The 3d design is just for illustration to you. You need to follow the cad file. The maximum height up-to which it safely raised with smaller camera like go pro and small cameras is 350 mm.with DSLR the maximum height goes to 300mm. The additional holes in the legs can be used for providing additional support to the structure when it raised. You can insert spacer in the empty space between legs and then tighten it with the knobs. It better to keep l key along with the stand because if you need to mount heavy equipment than you can keep the knobs tight and prevent legs from turning

Tools and Material Needed

Tools needed
1.The major thing you need to build this is a cnc router.
2.Drill machine
3.Drill Bits
4.Small vise for holding purpose
5.Philip head screw driver
6.Clip clamp
7.6mm tap
8.Sandpaper

Material
For the construction of whole build, I choose ply. If you have thickness planer I suggest you to go for wood.
1.6 mm ply for legs and spacers between legs
2.12mm ply for knobs and middle camera base
3.M5 35mm alen cap screw 9 pieces(if you wanted to make more knobs you can increase these numbers)
4.M6 40mm alen cap screw 2 pieces
5.Wood screw
6.Paint
7.Paint brush
I choose alen cap because if sometime I need to mount too much heavy camera I can tight it with alen key and it works very well indeed.

Cutting Out Parts and Little Bit Sanding to Remove Tabs

All the parts shown in the images are provided in the cad file. If you want to change it little bit you can do that as well. After cut out all part the major thing to do is sanding and remove tabs from your cut out parts. Smooth down everything.

Making the Nobs, Spacer’s and Nut Housing Knobs

In drawing the gear type thing are the knobs for the tripod stand for tightening purpose. The knobs have two circles inside them. The smaller one is equals to the diameter of screw and the outer circle is equals to the diameter of alen cap. If you choose different screw than don’t forget to replace those circles accordingly. In my case I didn’t do such things because I don’t have right screw at that time but I drilled small holes inside those knobs for the reference purpose. When I have right screw, I drilled holes by holding it in hand vise and drilled the bigger holes equals to the thickness of screw head to make the screw flush with the top surface of the knob. Before inserting the screw in the knob don’t forget to glued this with the knob and the glue I used is two-part epoxy. It kept your screw tight even if you tighten it with alen key. Spacer’s and Nut Housing The spacers are used to keep the constant space in legs. The thickness of spacers are 6mm which I used. This thickness is equal to the thickness of middle leg. These spacers are glued between both legs at one end only. The nut housing is the other important component of this build you can also built by making an exact hexagonal pattern in the spacer and then fit your nut in that but I made this with different method. I drilled under size hole in the spacers and then apply some two-part epoxy and the press fit the m5 nut in spacer.

Making the Camera Mount Base and Other Preparation.

Camera mount base is a 3-part assembly the two pieces of same dimension are glued together having one which have smaller hole in downward direction and other one on the upward direction respectively. Now tried to fit your bob inside that base if its head raised 6mm above the base than its good. If it raises little bit more than with the help of bigger drill you can make a contour inside that base. So, that your mounting ball can move freely inside that. You can also make the base with one inch thick wooden piece to make it more solid. There is also a third part which will fit over the bob assembly to keep this portion covered. You can also see the 3d modal what I want to express. This part you can glued or screwed with whole assembly like I do in my case. For making mounting screw with movable joint you have to use a spherical ball in which you can drill the hole with two part epoxy. This will make solid threads inside wood even after so much use there is not affect takes place on the threads. Image describes hole and then tap with the threads which will fits in your camera. I have sony cybershot and Nikon D90 camera both have m6 screw size. Hope this will work for you as well. But please check before taping threads in the ball. For the ball, I used plumb bob. The one which I have is made up of mild steel and diameter is 20mm. If you have bigger ball than you have to change some dimensions according to your need.
For mounting legs into the main base, you need to drill hole in the base arms to mount the legs into the mounting base as shown in images. For tightening the ball joint at its place you also need a tightening screw which keeps your camera steady place at any angle. For that drill a hole equals to the diameter of the nut and than glue that nut inside that you best.

Gluing Nut Holders and Spacers.

Mounting of nut housing is not a difficult task. Just apply glue on one side and then insert the knob in the holes and from the other side stuck your nut housing towards hole and then tighten the knob the nut assembly comes closer to the hole. Tighten it till glue squeezed out and then keep it for some while till glue dries. Almost same thing you have to with the spacers which you have to glued between two leg parts. Apply glue on both side of the spacer and then insert this in between the legs and then clamp it with the help of clip clamps as I do in my project. These clamps are very handy and apply adequate amount of pressure on the work piece.

Painting, Assembling and Final Look

If you completed all the stages, you are ready to assembled all parts. You can apply paste wax to make it more slippery if you don’t want to paint it. I prefer to paint it in gold and silver color to give it metal look. I hope you could make a better tripod than my one. If some how you are unable to understand my words than 3D modal will definitely help you otherwise I am always ready to help you.
